How to Pass a Basic Skills Test in Illinois

Candidates for teaching degrees and education positions in Illinois are often required to take the state's Basic Skills Test, which is administered by the Illinois Certification Testing System (ICTS). The test includes 125 multiple-choice questions and covers reading comprehension, grammar and writing skills along with a writing assignment. There are a variety of preparation materials available from ICTS to aid people aspiring to pass the test.

      Download the Basic Skills Test study guide, available on the ICTS website, labeled "field-specific information." This guide covers the major topics explored on the test and explains how the scoring process works. It also provides sample multiple-choice and essay questions and includes test-taking tips.

      Purchase a test preparation book or software for further practice. A variety of independent companies publish test preparation materials for the Basic Skills Test, including Mometrix Media, which publishes a book, and Research & Education Association, which publishes a book and produces a CD. These materials generally cost less than $50.

      Take the ICTS Basic Skills Diagnostic Test. Available on the ICTS website, the test can be taken either on the computer or paper. The diagnostic simulates the actual test and should give you a good idea of how you will score on test day.
