How to Obtain a GED From Virginia

The General Educational Development (GED) tests are a series of examinations designed for adults who--for any reason--had to leave school. GED Tests are available in every state in the U.S., but residents of Virginia can seek help from the state's Adult Learning Resource Center. Its website offers a comprehensive guide that can help you find GED classes near your home, as well as register for the exams at the most convenient testing center.

Instructions

    • 1

Visit Virginia's "Race to GED" website, which is provided by the state's Adult Learning Resource Center. Click on the "Questions" link on the right side of the main page to find answers to commonly asked questions, such as how old you need to be in order to take the exam or special provisions for applicants with disabilities.

    • 2

Prepare for the exam by enrolling in a GED class near your home. Find classes near you by clicking on the "Study" tab at the top of the "Race to GED" page. According to the website, these classes charge small or no fees at all.

    • 3

Study online in case there is no GED class near you or their schedules are not convenient. Register for online courses at the eLearnVA website or call 888-589-9003 for more information.

    • 4

Prepare for the GED test by doing homework on your own, in addition to your classes. The Khan Academy website offers a number of math videos to prepare you for the GED exams, while PBS stations regularly broadcast televised classes statewide.
