Places to Get a GED

If you want to take the GED, you have a number of options. You can prepare on your own, or you can choose to enroll in an online course or in a face-to-face workshop. The GED test covers five areas: math, writing, reading, science and social studies. Although some of the sections are multiple choice, you will also need to write an essay, solve math problems and analyze texts.
  1. In the U.S.

    • To get a GED, you need to go to an official testing center. Test centers are usually located within colleges, high schools and other educational institutions. To find one near you, you need to use a test locator. This is a website where you enter your zip code to get a list of testing centers near you. For example, if you enter 10027, the zip code for Upper West Side Manhattan in New York City, you'll get Mid-Manhattan Adult Learning Center on 120th Street, SUNY-Manhattan EOC on 125th Street and Mitchell Community Center in the Bronx, which is just a few blocks away.

    Outside the U.S.

    • You don't have to live in the US to take the GED. Over 70 countries around the world have GED-testing centers. The list includes centers in Europe, Africa, Asia and South America. Testing centers are sometimes located inside private testing centers, so prices might be higher than passing the exam in the U.S.

    Students with Disabilities

    • Most centers can accommodate students with minor physical disabilities as long as you notify them in advance. Blind students who need a test in Braille or audio cassette will need to check if the test center offers them a suitable means to take the test. Not every place is equipped for it, so you might need to search harder in order to locate a suitable place.

    Special Considerations

    • If you have special requirements, you might need to choose your testing centers more carefully. For example, taking the test can cost up to $100, depending on the location. Some testing centers, however, offer scholarships or discounts to those who can provide proof of low income or unemployment. You might also need to consider hours of operation. If you need to take the test after work, you'll need to locate a community college or a testing center with evening hours.
