How to Assess CogAT Results

A Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) is an assessment of reasoning skills given to students in grades K through 12. The purpose of the test is to determine future success in the areas of verbal, nonverbal and quantitative reasoning. It is not an IQ test and there is no 100-percent score. The most common use of the CogAT is for placement in gifted and talented programs. It is common to be concerned about any standardized test. Assessing the results will help you understand how your or your child placed.

Review the results that were sent from the testing agency. There will be some key information in the test results for you to assess, including the percentile and the score profile.

    • 2

Understand that the 50th percentile is the mid-range across the nation. The percentile range is from one to 99 and this demonstrates your or your child's standing among students in the same grade. If the percentile is 70, this means that you or your child tested better than 70 percent of the students in the same grade who took the test. In addition, it means that 30 percent of students scored higher.

    • 3

Look to see what your or your student's stanine was. This is a number from one to nine, with nine being the highest. The stanine helps to quickly identify areas of weakness and strength.

    • 4

Look at the profile, which will be a letter from A to D. This will indicate where your child placed. Relative strength and weaknesses will be included in the information and will correspond to a letter as well.

    • 5

Input the information into Riverside Publishing's Score Profile (see Resources). This will allow you to input the stanine, profile and the relative strength and relative weakness. This will give you a summary of information related to your or your child's results. If the results were 6C(Q+ V-), this means you or your child received a stanine of 6, a profile of C, a relative strength of Q+ and a relative weakness of V-. The profile explains that students with these parameters have average scores overall, with lower scores in verbal reasoning and higher scores in quantitative reasoning.
