The Texas Education Agency explains that the standard for this domain is designing appropriate lessons and assessments for students based on relevant information and materials. Competencies to study for the exam include an understanding of human development, learning processes and student diversity, and specifically, the cognitive, physical, social and emotional development of students in grades 8 through 12. The second domain of the PPR 8-12 is “Creating a Positive, Productive Classroom Experience,” which makes up about 15 percent of the exam. The standard for this domain is building rapport with students and creating a supportive classroom environment that promotes equity, excellence and learning, according to the Texas Education Agency. Competencies to study include establishing a positive and productive classroom environment, knowing how to manage student behavior, communicate effectively, offer engaging and appropriate instructions and provide effective student feedback. Prepare for questions on creating an environment that is inclusive and promotes learning, creating classroom routines that are organized and use technology, and promoting ethical classroom habits.
About 31 percent of the PPR 8-12 covers Domain III, “Implementing Effective, Responsive Instruction and Assessment.” The Texas Education Agency shares that the standard for this domain has the same standards as Domain I, plus additional standards related to creating instructional strategies that use effective communication techniques and engage students. This domain also has “technology application standards” related to technology use, data input, communicating information and problem solving. Study techniques to engage students in classroom discussions, provide clear directions and practice effective interpersonal communication. The fifth domain, “Health-Related Skills and Resources,” makes up about 23 percent of the PPR 8-12 test. The standard involves fulfilling professional responsibilities and roles while following ethical and legal requirements. Competencies here include understanding the importance of family involvement, enhancing personal professional knowledge and following the ethical and legal guidelines established for educators in Texas. Study how to communicate and work well with families of diverse backgrounds in person and electronically, as well as how to work effectively with others in a school community. Understand participating in school and district events, using resources and taking advantage of strategies that help you develop professionally. Study the legal requirements of educators, the use of educational resources, procedures for maintaining accurate records and the ethical guidelines outlined by the state of Texas and the Texas Education Agency.
