Write a list of public schools in your area. Narrow down the types of schools you include in your list according to the level and subject for which you need to find a teacher. For example, if you need to find a high school chemistry teacher, you probably would not include elementary schools in your list.
Include private schools in your list as well. Although not all private schools require their teachers to be state certified, some do. Also, some private schools may employ credentialed teachers but not require them to be credentialed to be on staff.
Add tutoring companies in your area to your list of places to find a credentialed teacher. Some tutoring companies only hire certified teachers, and others may hire those who are certified as well as those who are not. Do not forget to include online tutoring companies in your search. Many online tutors are also certified teachers as well. Tutor.com, TutorFi, and eTutorWorld are just three of the dozens of online tutoring companies out there.
Contact the schools and tutoring companies on your list. Tell the person to whom you speak specifically what type of teacher you are looking for and why. If you are looking for a private tutor for your child for a certain class, state that you want to hire a private tutor who is a certified teacher in that subject. The school can pass your message along to the teacher to see if she wishes to work with you. A tutoring company may help you find a tutor more quickly since that is its specialty.
Contact your state's teacher certification office to check on the credentials of a certain teacher. You usually have to enter the teacher's name (or at least part of her last name) into an online system to find what type of certification the teacher has, as well as when the certification expires.
