How to Find a Japanese Teacher

You might be seeking a Japanese teacher for a visit to Japan or just because you are interested in learning a new language. In urban areas, finding a teacher should not be too difficult, particularly if you live on the West Coast of the U.S. In the 1970s, cities such as Los Angeles and San Francisco experienced a great wave of immigration from Japan and other Asian countries. These areas have developed large, well-established Japanese communities. People living in more rural areas may need to look a bit harder for a Japanese teacher and may have better luck using the Internet to find one.

Instructions

    • 1

Search online and offline classified ads. Language teachers and tutors often run ads looking for new clients to teach.

    • 2

Contact an online language school, such as Berlitz, Rosetta Stone or Live Mocha. Some of these programs are computer-based. Although they might be expensive, both have proven success teaching people Japanese and other languages.

    • 3

Call a local college or university that has a Japanese department. Inquire if any instructors or advanced students teach Japanese lessons to individuals.

    • 4

Search the websites of Japanese teacher associations. Some of these sites have listings of tutors in different countries. Not every Japanese teacher listed as a tutor is willing to work with students online; some prefer to work in person.
