Contact resource groups in Louisiana. There are many groups throughout Louisiana (the Louisiana Home Education Network, Westbank Homeschool Organization and Home Educators Association, just to name several) dedicated to assisting families which are just beginning to home school. Contact information of instructors is typically provided upon request.
Browse your local classified ads. Prospective teachers often post their resumes to online listings or take out ads in printed publications. For best results, browse ads from your city as well as from any neighboring towns.
Talk to friends, relatives or co-workers that home school. They may be able to put in you in contact with independent instructors looking for work.
Meet your prospective teacher. Schedule a meeting at your house so your child can meet the person. Gather general information about them: schedule and availability, past employment as a teacher, and strengths as an instructor.
Confirm the credentials of your prospective teacher by viewing any issued certificates or diplomas in person. Although Louisiana state law does not require official training or schooling of home school teachers, you may desire a credentialed candidate. Also contact any references listed on their resume.
Perform a background check of the candidate. You local law enforcement office will be able to assist you with a state background check, which will reveal the existence of any criminal record.
Apply to the Louisiana Board of Education for approval of your home school arrangement. The application must be submitted at least 15 days after the start of instruction.
