A bulletin board with a variety of masks on it encourages the children to act out characters, as they can remove the masks and use them during free time. Hang masks at a level where students can reach them. You can create the masks out of heavy cardstock and laminate them so they will stand up to frequent use. Group them by theme, such as fairy tale, nursery rhyme or story. For example, you may have a picture that represents "The Three Little Pigs" accompanied by three pig masks and one wolf mask. Along the bottom of the bulletin board, you can hang folders that contain mask-making supplies for the children to make their own masks. Materials may include blank cardstock masks and yarn, paper plates and popsicle sticks for handheld masks, coloring supplies, glue and feathers or other embellishments.
The bulletin board should be covered in a landscape drawn on flannel. Provide people and animal figures as well as background figures such as trees, houses, wagons and cars. The figures should be made of cardstock with flannel attached to the back so that they will stick to the flannel board. Place the figures in an envelope and attach it to the bottom of the board, where the children can easily reach it. The children can act out and create stories by placing the figures on the bulletin board and moving them around. This bulletin board can easily be adapted to any theme by providing figures that go along with the stories that you're studying.
A puppet bulletin board encourages dramatic play as the children act out stories and create their own characters. Provide different kinds of puppets, hanging from the bulletin board within the students' reach. Along with the puppets, provide a puppet stage somewhere in the classroom for the students to use. Provide puppet-making materials, such as markers, paper bags, glue and paper, in folders attached to the bulletin board.
