Preschool Activities to Introduce a New Teacher

Preschool students are often more apprehensive than older students about meeting their teacher. A preschool teacher is often a child's very first teacher, and it is important that the child to learn to trust you from the beginning of the year. The more the children can learn about you, the new person in their lives, the easier it will be for them to adapt--and children learn best through fun and creative activities.
  1. Draw the Teacher

    • This activity encourages the children to really look at you and think about who you are. Give each child a piece of paper with a large image of a picture frame on it. Direct the children to use pencils, crayons, and/or markers to draw you. This is a perfect activity for preschool children because no writing is involved. It is also a great way for a new teacher to gain the children's attention, as it encourages young children to think carefully and observe closely.

    Get to Know Me Bag

    • This is a fun activity to share with the children on the first day of class. Prepare by filling a bag with personal items, such as small figurines, crayons of a favorite color, photos, and more. Sit in front of the students as you pull items out of the bag, and have the children guess what each item means. During the process the children will learn about your family, your likes and dislikes, and other personal details.

    All About Me Book

    • This is a good way to introduce yourself to new students at the beginning of the year as well as to children who join the class later. Create drawings or photos that describe or depict aspects of your life and bind them into a book. On the first day of class, share the book with the children and discuss each page. Save the book and show it to new students as they arrive.
