Provide the children with a variety of colors of construction paper and a number of magazines, as well as safety scissors and glue. Children may need help cutting out and pasting the pictures they will use for this project.
Instruct students to cut out one small picture from a magazine and glue it to the construction paper. Students should then cut out an unrelated picture and add it to the first. The idea is for the students to create a picture that is essentially noncohesive; all of the images will be unrelated.
The most important part of this project is that the students use their imaginations to create designs and form connections between unrelated concepts.
Prepare for this project by soaking a variety of colored chalk pieces in sugar water for 10 minutes; this will brighten the colors and prevent the chalk from smudging on the paper. In general, 1/3 cup of sugar dissolved in a cup of water will provide bright colors.
Give the children black construction paper; other colors can be used if the teacher has a large variety of chalk colors and students prefer the other paper. Students can draw anything they like on the paper, combining the unique texture of chalk with more traditional drawing tools such as crayons and markers.
This project teaches the children that they can work with a variety of tools to create art.
Give students a set of fingerpaints and supplemental activities such as crayons, markers and glitter for a hands-on artistic process.
Use nontoxic paint, and the children should wear clothing that can be stained. Students can mix paint colors to create their own blends, and can express their creativity by painting anything they want, making for a valuable learning experience.
