How to Be a Good Preschool Teacher

Preschool teachers must develop children's social interaction and emotional skills, unlike teachers with older students. Safety in the classroom is a major concern for preschool teachers, as is providing lessons in a fun and entertaining manner. While preschool teacher certification programs provide the skills necessary to teach young children, a good preschool teacher develops these skills with experience.

Instructions

    • 1

Teach through song and games. Young children have not yet acquired the skills to sit at a desk and learn by listening like older children. A good preschool teacher turns each lesson plan into an entertaining activity or a catchy song.

    • 2

Act with patience and stay calm throughout the day. Young children can make messes, cry for petty reasons and act uncontrollably wild. A good preschool teacher does not lash out at children for their behavior. Rather, she tries to understand why the child acts in a certain manner and attempts to teach children in a calm fashion.

    • 3

Teach each child at his own level. Each preschool-age child develops in a different manner. Some preschool children can talk fluently and perform fine motor activities without a problem. Others need extra help and attention. A good preschool teacher prepares lessons appropriate for all developmental levels.

    • 4

Notice educational and developmental problems. While each student develops in a different manner, a good preschool teacher picks up on deviations from the norm that could signal the need for special help. Although preschool teachers may not have the skills to deal with special education issues, a good preschool teacher develops a fine sense to notice the difference between minor problems and bigger issues.

    • 5

Prepare students for elementary school. This does not only include teaching basic numbers, letters and reading skills according to school or jurisdictional requirements. Preschool teachers must instill classroom skills such as sitting quietly during lessons, keeping track of items such as pencils and backpacks, and following directions from teachers.

Prepare students for dealing with life's challenges. Teach children how to interact with other children and adults on a social level. Educate children in personal and environmental hygiene. Help children understand and overcome their emotions.
