Christian Games to Play During Circle Time Preschool

Circle time in preschool is when the children come together with teachers. This gathering often begins the day's activities after all the children have arrived. Children learn basics such as calendar skills, weather facts and numbers, shapes or letters. Teachers typically use circle time to introduce the daily or weekly theme with the children. Games help children learn through play. Christian games present God's Word and world through a variety of fun activities.
  1. Miracles Games

    • Play this game using any or all of the miracles Jesus performed. Choose a child to go to the center of the circle and perform an activity. Blind activity: Close eyes and try to toss a beanbag into a bowl. Reach into a bag and guess what the bag contains. Walk along a piece of tape or yarn without looking down. Walking activities: Wrap toilet tissue around the legs of each child and play a game like "Duck, Duck, Goose." Have the children take turns trying to walk with each foot inside a paper bag, or walk carefully with both feet inside the same paper bag. Hearing activity: Have a child mouth words without making a sound and have others guess what she is saying. Make sounds with bells and other items and have children guess what the sound is. Stress to the children that Jesus made people well so they could see, hear, walk and other activities we are able to do.

Two by Two on the Ark

    • Noah took two of each animal into the ark.

Play a Noah's ark activity. Place two sets of inexpensive plastic animals inside a paper bag. Pass the bag around the circle. Each child will take one of the plastic figures and place it in a small paper bag of their own. Have the children close their eyes while friends are reaching into the bag, so they cannot see which animals others have. After the bag has gone around one or more times and is empty, have the children take turns reaching into their own paper bag and taking out one animal figure. The rest of the children can look into their bags and see if they have a matching piece. If so, that child with the matching piece must give it to the first child who took out the matching animal. After the animals are all taken out of the bags, have the children count to see who has the most "two-by-two" pairs.

    New Life Butterfly Game

    • Children can learn about new life by pretending to be a developing butterfly.

Let each child choose from a variety of colorful pieces of fabric (or whole bath towels). Tell the story of Jesus' death, burial and Resurrection. Then, read a book or show a picture of the life of a butterfly. Have the kids act out the butterfly's life cycle. They should wrap the cloth tightly around themselves and lie down like a caterpillar. Have children curl up in a ball with the cloth still around them. The children may then begin to spread out the cloth, sit up, then stand and slowly transform into a beautiful butterfly. At the end of the activity, each child should be standing and holding the cloth "wings" with their outstretched arms.
