Preschool Make-Believe Games

Make-believe games, or dramatic play, are important to the development of a preschooler, according to Dr. Elanna S. Yalow, an expert on childhood education. Dramatic play helps teach the child how to do some of the everyday activities he will accomplish as an adult, and helps him develop language skills. Students learn to play cooperatively when they have make-believe games with other children, and it helps them to sort out reality from fantasy.
  1. Home

    • A good preschool gives preschoolers the opportunity to play house. Children love to practice doing all the activities they see their parents doing. This is actually a child's "work," and she is learning by example and practice. Give the children a kitchen, laundry area where they can pretend to wash and iron clothes, brooms and vacuums for cleaning and carpentry bench to hammer in plastic nails. A large play house that they can use for tea time would be appreciated by most children.

    Jobs

    • Children should be provided with clothing and props necessary for them to pretend to be various occupations. Provide them with fire hose and fireman's hat, a policeman's badge, give them a doctor's outfit and some stuffed animals and dolls so they can be either a doctor or veterinarian. Some cowboy hats and props give them the opportunity to pretend to be cowboys. A play grocery store with money, groceries and baskets gives the children an opportunity to pretend to go shopping.

    Camping

    • Most children are enamored with the idea of camping. Camp indoors by setting up small tents. Provide the children with camping essentials such as mess kits, canteens, backpacks and sleeping bags. Pretend to make a fire by piling up some logs, and sing songs around the campfire. When it's nap time, they can even sleep in the tents.

    Fantasy

    • Look for any type of clothing that the children could use for fantasy play at yard sales or thrift stores. Provide the children with dresses, vests, hats, crowns, gloves, scarves, purses, shoes or shirts for them to play with as they wish. Encourage them to use their imagination when they are wearing a piece of clothing and imagine what a person wearing that item might be or do. This is a good opportunity for medieval times fantasy play.
