Read colorful picture books about the Bible to toddlers, such as "The Rhyme Bible Story Book" by Linda Sattgast. Follow up with some Christian toddler games, such as finger play rhymes that help children remember and understand the meaning of some parables. The Learn the Bible website gives examples of finger play rhymes for parables such as the "Ten Lepers." Hold up 10 fingers and say, "Jesus healed 10 lepers." Give a big smile and say, "They were very glad." Fold down nine fingers and say, "Nine did not say 'Thank you'." To conclude, make a sad face and say, "That made Jesus sad." Develop finger play rhymes for other parables, such as "The Lost Coin."
Some Christian toddler games, such as Bible picture lotto, are suitable for small groups of approximately two to three children with an adult or older child as helper. This game is simple to prepare using "Clip Art" pictures from the Sunday School Resources website. Each child needs a board with six pictures on it, featuring, for example, Noah's Ark, a church, a cross, the Earth, a Bible and praying hands. Make enough copies of the pictures on separate cards for each child to match to the picture on his board. Children take turns to pick up a card, name the picture and match it to their board.
It is possible to give a Christian slant to some early years' songs, making them suitable Christian toddler games. For example, replace the words of the song, "If you're happy and you know it" with a song of praise for God: "God made us happy and we know it." Encourage toddlers to join in, naming and pointing to body parts and doing the actions, for example: "God made us happy and we know it: clap your hands!" Other songs that are suitable as Christian toddler games include, "Head, Shoulders Knees and Toes," (replacing the traditional words of the song with the words, "God Made Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes").
Play energetic toddler games, such as ring games, in a large area or outside. Toddler games, such as "The farmer's in his den" become suitable Christian games by replacing the "farmer" and his "wife" with "Noah" and "Mrs. Noah." Choose two children to play the roles of "Noah" and "Mrs. Noah" during the game. The children choose the name of an animal, (for example, "elephants"), and "Noah" and "Mrs. Noah" choose two children as "elephants" to enter the ring with them. Continue, choosing the names of other animals and children to enter the ring, "two by two."
