Preschool Snowflake Art Projects

When you're stuck inside on a dreary winter day, have preschoolers focus on how beautiful winter can be. Snowflake art projects are ideal for preschoolers. Since no two snowflakes are the same, there's no wrong way to make one. Bring some handfuls of snow into the classroom. Spread the snow out on black paper and let preschoolers study the flakes through magnifying glasses. They'll be amazed at how much detail they can find in such a small snowflake.
  1. Mobiles

    • Create mobiles to hang from the ceiling. Start by having children cut out six to eight snowflakes apiece. Children may either cut their own flakes from white paper or you can provide shapes for them to cut. "Scholastic" offers printable snowflake shapes on its website. Punch a hole in the top of each snowflake and tie on a piece of string. Cut each string anywhere from six to 18 inches so the snowflakes will hang at different heights. Tie the strings to a clothes hanger to finish the mobile.

    Coffee Filter

    • Give each child a plain coffee filter. Cover the table with newspaper and have each child spread his filter out on top of the paper. Pass out markers and have children decorate their filters with whatever designs they want. After they have decorated the the filters, pass out cups of water. Children can dip their fingers into the water, then flick the water onto the filter repeatedly until the entire thing is damp. Another option is for children to use paintbrushes or eye droppers to put the water onto the filter. After the marker is wet, the color will spread out and look tie-dyed. Dry the filters and hang them in the windows.

    Personalized Name Tags

    • Explain that no two snowflakes are the same, just as no two children are the same. Trace 8-inch circles on white paper and have each child cut one out. Show them how to fold the circle in half, then into quarters. They can then cut small shapes out of the edges of the folded paper. When they open the paper up, a unique snowflake shape appears. Glue or tape each child's picture onto the center of his snowflake and laminate them. Hang the tags on the door or tape one to each child's spot at the table.

    Craft Stick Snowflakes

    • Make snowflakes out of wooden craft sticks. Buy small wooden circles from a craft store. Give each child eight to 10 craft sticks. Show them how to arrange the sticks into a snowflake shape so the ends of each stick overlap in the center. Children should put one dot of glue in between each overlapped end to hold the sticks together. When the glue is dry, glue the wooden circle onto the front of the snowflake to hide the overlapped ends. Tie a string around the snowflake and hang it in a window or from the Christmas tree.
