Quick Preschool Art Projects

Preschool children love to paint, color, glue and cut just about anything. They are eager to learn, create and show off their projects to their families. Many preschoolers do not want assistance from adults and take great pride in doing it themselves. Keeping the project fairly simple will allow the child to stay focused and not get frustrated with the task at hand.
  1. Foam Doorknob Hangers

    • Give each child a foam doorknob hanger. Have the preschoolers choose foam letters, foam shapes, pom poms, buttons, stickers and other embellishments to decorate their signs. Instruct the children to design the sign by gluing on their decorations. Let them dry completely before transporting.

    Grass Planters

    • Supply one plastic cup for each preschooler. Have the child paint the cup any color they like. As the paint is drying, have the students cut out two eyes and a mouth from construction paper. Glue the eyes and mouth on to the planter. Have the student spoon potting soil into the cup so that it is about 3/4 full. Sprinkle one tablespoon of grass seed on top of the soil and lightly drizzle with water. Let the cups sit on a sunny window ledge. As the grass grows, it will start to resemble hair.

    Pine-cone Bird Feeders

    • Gather enough large pine cones for each preschooler and tie a piece of twine to the pointed end of each one. This will allow it to hang on a branch. Have each child spread peanut butter all over the pine cone with a plastic butter knife, pushing the peanut butter into the openings. Pour birdseed onto small paper plates and have each child roll the peanut-butter covered pine cone in the seed until it is covered. If the child is taking the pine cone from one location to another, store it in a small resealable bag.

    Shrinky Dink Necklace

    • Give each preschooler a sheet of Shrinky Dinks Ruff n' Ready Shrinkable Plastic paper with one hole punched at the top. The hole will shrink during baking, so make sure it is large enough to be usable after it shrinks. Using markers, have each child draw and color a picture on the paper and be sure it includes his name. Place each piece on a clean cookie sheet with the colored side facing up. Make sure that they are not touching. Bake in a 300-degree oven for about three minutes. Remove from the oven and allow them to cool completely. Give each child her Shrinky Dink and have her thread a large string through the hole so she can wear it like a necklace.
