How to Compare Bananas in Preschool

Young children learn best by hands-on activities and becoming physically involved in their lessons. Learning to compare is a useful skill that 3- and 4-year-olds should learn. Since bananas are often a favorite food at that age, and since they make a healthy snack, you can teach your preschoolers how to compare and contrast like items by using bananas as a manipulative.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose bananas that have identifying characteristics. Make sure you have some that are green, some that have brown spots and some that are fully brown. Leave some bananas whole and unpeeled, peel some, cut some into chunks and mash some.

    • 2

Pass out a banana to each child. Ask them not to eat their bananas yet.

    • 3

Ask the children what all of the bananas have in common. Answers might include that they are all bananas, they are all fruit or that they all grew on a tree. Write these answers on your white board.

    • 4

Ask the children how the bananas are all different. Possible answers are that they are different colors, they have different brown markings, some are larger than others, the textures are different and some are unpeeled. Write these on your white board as well.

    • 5

Summarize the lesson by explaining to the children that even though each child has a banana, the bananas are all different in some way.

    • 6

Collect the inedible bananas from those who have them, and pass out fresh bananas to each child. Allow them to enjoy their snack.
