How to Open a Church Run Preschool

Church-run preschools and day cares provide opportunities for churches to contribute to their communities. It also connects families to quality educational options for their preschoolers. Once you've formed a feasibility committee and put together a business plan, there are a few steps to get your church preschool up and running.

Instructions

    • 1

Contact your district, state or national denominational headquarters, dioceses or presbytery and your insurance department. Set up a meeting with the appropriate people at these levels to discuss your plans to begin a preschool at your location.

    • 2

Research your state's licensing procedure for opening a preschool at your church. Each state has preschool licensing requirements and guidelines that govern schools, preschools and day cares. Following these guidelines will ensure that your preschool is in full compliance with all local and state regulations. These guidelines will also assist you in establishing and maintaining licensing and registration for your preschool.

    • 3

Submit all necessary paperwork to your church board of directors, session, board of trustees or other church governing board for approval. Once you have completed your application process with the state and filed all the necessary paperwork, you can apply to your church board for approval of your plan. This may involve a vote from your church body, depending on the type of church government you have.

    • 4

Publish and comply with all IRS-required, non-discriminatory polices. The IRS requires all schools and day cares to certify publicly that they have a policy of racial nondiscrimination and do not discriminate on the basis of color, race or ethnic origin. This statement should also be included in your preschool charter. You must also publish a notice of racial nondiscrimination in the local newspaper, radio or television at least once a year.

    • 5

Submit annual reports. Each year, your preschool should submit annual reports to any and all church governing boards. This includes boards at the local, state and national level when appropriate.
