How to Use Flannel Boards

A flannel board is a versatile and inexpensive part of a preschool classroom or home playroom. They are available at teacher supply stores and they are simple to make using easy-to-find materials. Even if you don't have a lot of space for a flannel board, children will enjoy using one of almost any size. Mount it to the wall or keep a portable flannel board on hand for use on a chair, at a table or in the car.

Instructions

    • 1

Mount the flannel board on the wall securely so it won't move when children push on it. If you're using a smaller, portable flannel board, make sure the back side is smooth and free from hooks, wires or sharp pieces -- anything that could scratch a table or hurt a child.

    • 2

Cut shapes from pieces of felt. Begin with basics, such as stars, hearts, numbers and letters. Use a variety of colors. Cut pictures from magazines and laminate them. Place a small dab of glue on the back side of the laminated image and attach a small square of hook-and-loop adhesive. Place these felt and magazine cut-outs into a basket and keep it near the flannel board.

    • 3

Demonstrate the correct way to use the flannel board and the proper way to handle pieces that will be placed on the flannel board. Showing young children the proper way to use it will prevent future problems from misuse. Begin with a clear flannel board and remove one felt piece from your basket. Press it gently with your hand on to the surface of the flannel board. Place another felt piece, telling the children a story about the pieces as you go.

    • 4

Take a laminated magazine picture from the basket and press it gently on the flannel board. Show your students the small piece of hook-and-loop adhesive on the back of the picture and explain that it's necessary to be gentle when removing the picture from the board because it will snag the flannel covering.

    • 5

Remove the pieces and ask your students to share their ideas for using the flannel board. Explain that you'll be using it to tell stories, practice counting and spelling, learn colors and explore seasons.
