How to Use Seguin Ten Boards

Seguin ten boards, also called ten boards, teen boards and number boards, are used in many Montessori schools to help children begin to associate "teen" number names with their corresponding numerals. The ten boards are two boards that hold number cards. One board has the number "10" five times, and the other has it four times. They are always used in conjunction with each other. Cards numbered 1 through 9 accompany these boards and can be slipped into the slots so that they overlap the 10's underneath.

Instructions

    • 1

Line the sequin ten boards up on the mat. The board with five slots goes on top with the board with four slots directly underneath. You should have a column of nine 10's, one on top of the other, when they are lined up correctly.

    • 2

Sit side by side with the student. This way you will each see the lesson from the same perspective.

    • 3

Slip the 1 card into the spot over the zero in the first ten. As you do so, say, "Ten and one is eleven. This is the way we write eleven." Repeat the word eleven several more times.

    • 4

Repeat the process with the cards 2 through 9. With each number, you will use the same formula, so that with the 2 card you will say, "Ten and two is twelve. This is the way we write twelve. Twelve...twelve...twelve," and with the 9 card you will finish by saying, "Ten and nine is nineteen. This is the way we write nineteen. Nineteen...nineteen...nineteen." At the end you will have a column of the numbers 11 through 19.

    • 5

Ask the child to point at various numbers. This is to practice matching the name with the numeral. Make sure that you ask for each number at least once, and that you do not ask for them in order. For example, you might say, "Can you show me twelve? How about fifteen? Now point to eighteen," and so on.

    • 6

Point to numbers while the child tells you their names. As before, do not point to the numbers in order, and make sure that you point to all of them at least once.

    • 7

Finish by pointing and naming the numbers in order together. You and the student should both point at and say the numbers and their names in order.

    • 8

Keep the seguin ten boards in an easily accessible location. The student should be able to get them out and practice whenever she likes on her own.
