Clean the slate board with an eraser and wet cleaning cloth before using it for history class. It is important to start with a clean slate board for every class unless there is important information that must be left on the board for a while. Examples of important information could be test dates, dates of wars or names of historical figures.
Write new important information on the slate board during history class. Write important names, dates and locations of historical people, wars and places. Use the information on the board to supplement a lecture on important historical events.
Use a ruler and chalk to draw a timeline. A timeline is a very useful visual aid in history class. Draw a straight line horizontally and then add small vertical hash marks that indicate different dates. Place the dates in chronological order along the timeline, starting with the earliest important date on the left side and ending with the most recent important date on the right.
Use different colored chalks to indicate different aspects of the history lesson. Write all the important names in one color and dates in another.
Point at the information on the slate board using a pointer during your lecture. This will enhance your history lesson.
Stand to the side of the slate board while speaking to avoid blocking a student's view of the historical material.
