How to Use the Internet at College

Since its advent, the Internet has been a valuable tool for accessing important information and data. The Internet is used by professors and students on college campuses around the world, so knowing how to access and use the World Wide Web while at college will improve and enhance your secondary education.

Instructions

    • 1

Keep in communication with your professor by visiting your class website on a regular basis. You should be able to download and print a syllabus, access project or homework instructions and view reading assignments on this site. If you have a question about a topic discussed in class or an assignment, you can send an email to your professor, set up a one-on-one meeting with him or check his office hours to find a good time to stop by his office between your classes.

    • 2

Use the Internet to help you with your homework. If you want to know more about a certain topic that is discussed in class or in a reading assignment, you can type it into a search engine and find the information. You can also use online calendars and reminder services to keep track of your schedule, project due dates and homework assignments instead of carrying a bulky planner.

    • 3

Use the Internet to find answers to questions that arise during discussions in class if you take your laptop to class or sit in a classroom with individual desktop computers. For example, if no one remembers who coined a certain quote in your literature class, type the quote into a search engine and find the answer.

    • 4

Communicate with other students in classroom forums set up by your university or by sending emails around to each other. This way, you can get answers to questions you don't understand or you can set up study groups before a test or a quiz.

    • 5

Listen to class lectures if your professor takes the time to post them online. Some professors record their lectures and post them as podcasts on their websites or on an audio service such as iTunes. If this is the case for one of your classes, you can download the lectures from the Internet and listen to them to help understand the material better or to review before a test. This can also be helpful if you miss a class or two.
