How to Make Letters With Strings

Preschool and kindergarten teachers may integrate sensory activities to teach their students how to construct letters. Using string to loosely shape various letters of the alphabet not only increases letter recognition but also provides a hands-on technique to what can be a tedious task for students with short attention spans. Feeling and working with the string encourages students to use the sense of touch to learn different letter shapes. Integrate a more permanent string art activity by gluing the string down.

Instructions

    • 1

Use snippets of string to construct alphabet letters on your work surface. For example, create the letter "A" by laying a piece of string horizontally on the surface and use your finger to push the center of the string upward, creating a mountain shape. Use a much smaller piece of string as the small line connecting the center of the two mountain sides.

    • 2

Place a piece of construction paper flat on your work surface and draw a letter in the center of the paper to begin another letter creation option. Lay the string over the drawn letter to get a feel for letter construction. As an example, create the letter "O" by placing the end of the string at the top of a drawn circular shape and form the string into a ring, connecting back at the top with the first end.

    • 3

Squirt a string of glue onto the paper in the shape of a letter and lay the string over the glue. For instance, make a letter "M" by drawing two connected mountains on the paper with glue and laying one string end at the bottom left end of the first mountain shape. Straighten the string and glue it down, create a tight corner at the top and continue down, up and back down again. Allow the glue to dry completely before moving the paper.
