How to Incorporate Spanish Into a Preschool Classroom

Being bilingual is a great asset, as it enables communication across cultures. In addition, learning a different language can help improve native language skills, increase cognition and promotes multicultural awareness. Learning a second language should begin at a young age, when children are developing language skills and when comprehension of a foreign language is an easier task. Since Spanish is one of the most commonly spoken languages, it makes sense to teach it to children. On the preschool level, infusing the language into daily activities can develop children's ability to speak it.

Instructions

    • 1

Incorporate Spanish words into the daily routine of your classroom. Recite the Spanish translation of common English words. For example, after stating the English days of the week, months of the year, colors, numbers, or letters, review those words in Spanish.

    • 2

Use games to teach children Spanish words. For example, play a game of "I Spy" and provide children with Spanish clues to find an item. Play a game of Spanish "Bingo" in which you state the Spanish words for the images on the Bingo cards. Play "Simon Says," but replace English commands with Spanish words.

    • 3

Review Spanish words while reading aloud. Point out images of common items within picture books, state their English names and translate the words into Spanish. Ask the children if they can name the Spanish words for various images within the texts.

    • 4

Select a Spanish word-of-the-day or word-of-the-week. Introduce the word at the beginning of class. Tell the children the translation of the word and the try to use the word as many times as possible throughout the day or week.

    • 5

Translate popular children's songs and sing them in Spanish. For example, you could sing "I'm a Little Teapot" or "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star" in English and then in Spanish.
