How to Make Felt Figures to Tell a Story

Take an ordinary story and bring it to life for your kids by using felt figures on a story board. Move the felt figures around on the board and change scenes as you turn the pages. Kids can help create the felt figures that accompany the story and can also participate in moving the figures around during the book reading. You don't need much time or many supplies to create an interactive lesson for your kids.

Instructions

    • 1

Pick the story you want to tell. A very long story can become too intricate if there are numerous figures, so keep it simple. Generally, 10 to 15 figures should accompany your story.

    • 2

Print out figure templates for the felt. A template gives you a size perspective for your felt figures. DLTK offers several templates, from people to animals to plants, for different story types.

    • 3

Cut out the templates for your felt pieces.

    • 4

Trace your template figures onto your felt pieces. Use a fine-point marker or pen to outline the figures.

    • 5

Cut out the felt figures using sharp scissors. Cut away any extra marker or pen lines left from tracing.

    • 6

Glue on any craft eyes or hair to your felt figures. Use a marker to make a face on felt people.

    • 7

Place your felt figures on your story board. The felt will naturally stick to the flannel on your story board. Add any extra scenery like clouds, trees or flowers around your felt figures.
