Take a close-up photo of each of your students, using a digital camera. Take a picture of each center or learning area in your classroom as well.
Digitally adjust the image size of each student to about 2 inches square, and adjust each learning center's image to about 3 inches tall by 5 inches wide. Print out each of the images on photo paper. Set aside the photos of your learning areas.
Cut out the pictures of your preschoolers.
Glue each student's photo to the left side of a piece of heavy paper or card stock that measures 4 by 8 inches. Allow the glue to dry completely.
Write the name of each preschooler next to his photograph, to the right of it, using a black marker.
Place two of the 4-by-8-inch student cards onto the sticky side of one piece of 9-by-12-inch laminating paper, leaving space in between the two cards and around their edges. Align a second piece of laminating paper over top by placing its sticky side against the sticky side of the first sheet, where you affixed the photo cards. Press down on the edges and all across the sheet, to seal each card inside the lamination.
Repeat Step 6 until you have laminated all your students' cards.
Cut out each student's card, and trim any excess laminating paper from around it.
Cut a 1/2-inch piece of hook-and-loop fastener for each photo card. Peel the backing off each piece, and attach half to the back of each card. Save the opposite half of each piece of hook-and-loop fastener.
Cut out each picture of your learning centers.
Glue the pictures down the left of the longer side of a poster board. Allow the glue to dry completely.
Attach the reserved hook-and-loop fastener halves to the right of each learning center. For example, if you allow four students in the block area at one time, attach four pieces of hook-and-loop fastener next to the picture of your block center.
Show your preschoolers how to attach the hook-and-loop fastener on the back of their photo card to the activity they wish to participate in. Tell them to choose a center that has an opening. An empty piece of hook-and-loop fastener is a signal that they are welcome to choose that activity.
