How to Wrap Up a Paragraph

Paragraphs are the fundamental structural unit of any long essay or piece of writing. Comprised of multiple sentences, paragraphs often encompass part of an idea or argument. Ending a paragraph with an appropriate and well-written concluding sentence is important, for the sentence will serve not only to summarize the thoughts already expressed in the paragraph, but also to transition smoothly and effectively to the next paragraph.

Instructions

    • 1

Summarize the sentences expressed in the paragraph. As an example, imagine a paragraph that explores Thomas Jefferson's role in early United States history. A concluding sentence might review Jefferson's major accomplishments, such as writing the Declaration of Independence and his term as the third President.

    • 2

Include information on why the information expressed in the paragraph is important to the subject or why it is relevant to the reader. Keeping with the example of Thomas Jefferson, a concluding sentence might argue that Jefferson's involvement in the formative years of the United States was influential in creating the modern perception of the United States by its citizens.

    • 3

Include information that provides a transition to the next paragraph. If the next paragraph will include information on the history of states rights in America, the concluding sentence might also examine Jefferson's advocacy of states' rights during his term as President.

    • 4

Tie together the summation of the paragraph, the importance of the information, and the transitory information that hints at what is to come. For example: "Without Jefferson as lead writer of the Declaration of Independence or his leadership as President, the nation would look much different than it does today, particularly with regard to states' rights."'
