How to Access IT Training

Employment in IT related jobs will grow much faster than the average and add 286,600 new jobs over the next decade, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Information technology, or IT, is a vital sector in today's workplace. It is important computer and information systems run smoothly for government and private organizations to work effectively. IT workers can be categorized in eight main groups: programming, software engineering, technical support, enterprise systems, database development, web development, network design, digital media and technical writing. Prospective IT workers can find training in information technology areas from a variety of sources, which range from free self-taught courses to advanced degrees in renowned universities.

      Apply to the training supplier. This can be as easy as downloading a tutorial from Microsoft Office IT training website (see Resources) or as hard as fulfilling Harvard's demanding admissions criteria.

      Pay the course fees. There are federal and state grants and flexible loans you can apply for, such as the Federal Pell Grant Program. If you are unemployed, you might be allowed to access IT training while you receive your unemployment benefits.
