How to Learn ACLS

The American Heart Association (AHA) has redesigned Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) courses for healthcare providers. The emphasis remains on basic life support for patient survival using cardio-pulmonary resuscitation, integrated with ACLS interventions and effective team communications. There is an optional ACLS Experienced Provider Course, also HeartCodeTM ACLS; a self-paced process allowing the healthcare provider to complete one-third of the certification requirements online. The American Safety and Health Institute also offers ACLS training and certification.

Students will need an ACLS reference manual and must pass the written and skills tests.

Access the HeartCodeTM ACLS course in three parts that integrates skills and web-based training. Part one is the 6 hour online class and exam; the content includes virtual-scenarios for patient treatment, BLS evaluation and response, medications for emergencies and cardiac resuscitation. Unlimited 2 year access of a downloadable ACLS manual, drugs reference guide and AHA CPR guidelines are included. Part two consists of skills practice at a training center with a manikin. Part three---at a training center---consists of the skills test on a voice-assisted manikin with a certified ACLS instructor present. The on-site skills practice and training time ranges from 20 to 60 minutes.
