How to Convert MPH to M/S With a Calculator

Mph stands for miles per hour and m/s stands for meters per second, both of which measure the speed or velocity of an object, such as a car driving or an asteroid flying through space. Meters per second is the metric system unit, while mph is used in the United States. One mph equals 0.447 meters per second. If you know this conversion factor, using a calculator can help you convert between the two units even faster.

Instructions

    • 1

Enter the speed in mph on the calculator. For example, if your speed equals 40 mph, enter "40."

    • 2

      Push the multiplication sign.

    • 3

Enter "0.447," which is the number of m/s per mph.

    • 4

Push the equals sign to have the calculator display the converted speed in m/s. In this example, the calculator will display that 40 mph equals 17.88 m/s.
