How to Change MPH to KM

Two main measurement systems are currently in use -- metric and Imperial, also known as customary. The metric system of measurement is used worldwide. All units in metric are in units of 10 related to one another, so converting between one metric unit and another is simple. For example, 1,000 meters is 1 kilometer. However, the Imperial system has varying numbers for each conversion; for example, 1 mile is equal to 5,280 feet. One of the most important Imperial-metric conversions you may have to make is miles per hours (MPH) to kilometers per hour (KPH).

    • 1

Determine the measurement you have in miles per hour. For an example, convert 30 mph into its equivalent in kilometers per hour.

    • 2

Multiply the number in miles per hour by 1.61. The more exact conversion is 1.609, but you can round to two decimal places. For example, 30 multiplied by 1.61 equals 48.3.

    • 3

Express your result in kilometers per hour. Therefore, 30 mph converts to 48.1 kph.
