The unit mil measures distance and equals 0.001 inches. The mil is also known as a milli-inch or a thou and is most commonly used in the United States for engineering work. The term "mil," however, is used less frequently because the metric system is used more often and "mil" may be confused with the millimeter. Micro-inches are an even smaller unit of distance equal to 0.000001 inches. Therefore, it takes 1,000 micro-inches to equal 1 mil.
