A Listing of Summer Theme Activities for Kindergarten

Kindergarten children can enjoy summer themed activities throughout the year. Teach children about the seasons, weather and summer activities through a variety of crafts, games and active play. Hands-on activities are a favorite of teachers and children alike. Kindergartners can use their creative skills as well as large and small motor skills while learning about the theme of summer.
  1. Summer Wear

    • Reproduce patterns for sunglasses, visors and flip-flops onto card stock or heavy paper. Have kindergartners cut out the patterns and color them as they wish. Help the children cut the eye-glass part from the glasses. Cut and tape ovals of dark-colored cellophane paper to finish the sunglasses. Help the children bend the temples of the glasses to wear them. After children cut out and color their visors, tape a one-foot length of string onto each end of the visor. Tie the string to fit the visor to a child's head. Provide stickers, ink stamps or markers for the children to create their own designs on the flip-flops. Staple a strip of heavy paper onto each side of the flip-flop to hold them onto the childrens' feet. Provide plain white t shirts for the children to decorate with Hawaiian flower fabric cutouts. Use craft glue to attach the flowers or press place strips of iron-on fusible webbing under the flowers and press with a warm iron.

    Summer Sports Game

    • Play follow the leader with the children. Choose a child to be leader. That child will pretend to swim, ride a bike, fish, row a boat or hit a baseball. Change leaders often, so each kindergartner gets a chance to lead the game. Mention some sports as the game progresses or let the children make up their own ideas of a summer sport.

    Beach Sand Globe

    • Provide plastic fish and other sea creatures as desired. Also provide some small sea shells. Have the children place some of the beach-related items into a clear plastic jar such as a peanut butter jar. Have the kindergartners scoop some sand into their jars. Place the lids on tightly. The children can shake up their sand globes and watch the sand and the beach items settle.

    Camping Gear Guessing Game

    • Put some camping gear into a duffel bag. Give the kindergartners some clues about an item that you are going to take out of the bag. When they guess correctly, remove the item. Then have the children guess another item. Roll out sleeping bags, set up a small tent, hang a batter-operated lantern and place other items around the activity area as you play the game. Then allow the children time to play with the items and pretend to camp.

    Collage Book

    • Have kindergartners choose pictures of summer items and activities from magazines. The children should cut out the pictures they choose. Have them glue at least one item onto a piece of paper to make a book page. Each child should have several book pages. Have them write one or more words onto each page, depending on their writing skill levels, to describe the pictures on each page. When the glue dries, staple the books together.
