Steps to Stop My Child From Being Retained in Kindergarten

When the end of the school year approaches, your child in kindergarten will naturally be excited about progressing to the first grade with his peers. Unfortunately, some children will not be allowed to proceed. A child is typically retained in kindergarten if he demonstrates that he is not academically ready for the challenges of first grade. Many schools offer a first-grade entrance exam to decide if a student is ready to graduate kindergarten, while other schools rely on the child's teacher to make the decision.

Talk to your child's teacher to find out the school's policies for graduating kindergarten. Once you understand what is required of your child, you can help him meet those requirements. Most schools require that children graduating from kindergarten hold basic math and reading skills, such as counting to 100 and printing their own names.

    • 2

Talk to your child's teacher about the areas your child struggles with. The teacher can tell you exactly what areas of your child's learning need improvement. Focus on these areas when you study with your child.

    • 3

Read out loud to your child every day. Choose books that are designed for early readers and that use short, simple sentences. Your child should begin to recognize sight words, but take the time to sound out lengthier words that she doesn't recognize.

Incorporate math into your daily activities. Count out loud with your child while he takes a bath, or have him help you with baking to practice addition. Let your child help you count your change or figure out how much money your grocery bill is. The more your child practices math skills, the better prepared he will be for the first grade.

Print with your child each day. Practice printing the alphabet and spend extra time on any letters your child may struggle with.
