Helping a Child's Transition From Day Care to Kindergarten

If your little one has been going to day care, he probably has learned a lot about social interactions and basic life skills. However, many children still have some difficulty when it is time to transition from day care to kindergarten. A kindergarten class is likely to be more structured and demanding than a day care setting. As a parent, you can help to make this transition easier for your child to handle, which will help him to enjoy kindergarten more and learn more once he is there.

Instructions

    • 1

Talk to your child about what to expect in kindergarten. Discuss the idea of not going to day care anymore or being at day care less than before. Ask her if she has any questions. Listen to her concerns and reassure her about any possible worries. Simple communication can help a great deal.

    • 2

Allow your child to say goodbye to day care friends and workers if he won't be going to day care once he starts kindergarten. You might bring a snack for his last day there, along with some treats for his friends and simple gifts for day care workers.

    • 3

Take your child to meet her teacher and tour her new school. This will help to ease fears of the unknown.

    • 4

Arrange play dates with future classmates if possible. If you know of other children who will be in your child's kindergarten class, try to arrange a get-together. If your child knows someone who will be in his class, he may feel more secure about starting kindergarten.

    • 5

Review basics such as colors, shapes, letters and numbers. Familiarity with these concepts will give your child a head start for the upcoming year.
