First Day at Child Care Tips

Before the First Day

• Introduce the idea of going to child care to your child. Explain some of the activities that she will be doing during the day and tell her if any of her friends are attending the same facility. Schedule a time to visit the child care center with your child before the first day of class. Take a quick tour of her room and introduce her to the teacher, if possible. Pick out special supplies that she needs together. Answer any questions that your child has in a positive manner and avoid showing your apprehension in front of her.

The Night Before

• Spend time with your child getting all of his supplies ready and select a special outfit for him to wear on his first day at the center. Remind him that tomorrow is his first day at child care and talk to him about some of the special activities he should look forward to. Complete a calming bedtime routine and ensure your child gets to sleep at an early hour. Pack a lunch, if your child needs one, after he goes to bed, and include a simple note on his napkin for him to find during the day.

The Morning of the First Day

• Get up early and ensure that everything is ready for your child's first day. Gather any documentation or paperwork that is required by the center and complete any of your morning tasks before waking your child. Prepare one of your child's favorite breakfasts and help her get dressed and ready for her first day at child care. Leave the house with plenty of time to travel to the center and spend the ride answering any last-minute questions that she may have. Tell your child what to expect when you arrive at the center and when you will be back to pick her up.

In the Center

• Walk with your child to his room and take him to greet the teacher. Give your child a quick hug and kiss and leave the room promptly to make the transition easier for both of you, suggests the KidsHealth website. Avoid sneaking out of the center without saying goodbye or lingering in the room after you have told your child you are leaving. Pick your child up at the time you told him you would return and ask how his day went. Celebrate a successful first day with a small treat for your child.
