Kindergarten Grammar Activities

Grammar may be a difficult topic for kindergarten students to understand. However, it is important that kids this age learn the basics of the English language so they can build their grammar knowledge. Simple activities that slowly begin to show kids the basics of grammar will help with their learning and development in later years.
  1. Flashcard Games

    • Teach kindergartners about adjectives and singular versus plural with a simple flashcard game. Make large flashcards of pictures, for example animals, that can be seen from far away, so the entire class can see them when you hold them up. Some of the pictures should have multiple animals, and some should have one animal. Hold up each flashcard one at a time and ask the kids to tell you if there are "dogs" on the card or a "dog." This will teach kids to recognize the difference between singular and plural nouns. Also ask kids to give you an adjective to describe the picture. For example, if you hold up a picture of a kitten, encourage kids to use words like soft, cute and fuzzy. Reward students for being able to recognize what adjectives are and for using them properly.

    Adjective Art Game

    • Adjectives can sometimes be difficult for kindergarten-age kids to grasp, but it is important for them to learn what adjectives are, which is why activities that make learning fun are important. Give kids art supplies such as scraps of fabric, stickers, ribbons, sequins and feathers. Let kids pick a piece of construction paper and fold it in half to make a card for their parents or a loved one. Let the kids decorate the card however they want. When they are done, ask the kids to stand up and give three adjectives for their card. This activity will get kids excited about grammar and let them explore their creativity at the same time.

    Verb Game

    • Begin to introduce kids to action verbs in a game that teaches kids about verbs and lets them expend energy at the same time. You can create a song for kids to sing while you are picking up the room. When you teach the kids the words emphasize what the action verb is in each sentence. You can also play a game similar to "Simon Says" in which you tell kids to complete an action verb. Write a sentence on the board such as "The students jumped up and down." Explain to the kids that the verb is "jumped," and have the kids jump up and down like the sentence says.

    Alphabet Game

    • One of the biggest things kindergartners need to learn before they graduate to first grade is the alphabet. Many kids do not know or understand the alphabet while in kindergarten, and the alphabet serve as the basis for all their grammar knowledge. In addition to reviewing the alphabet daily, you can incorporate several daily activities in with the alphabet. Have letter-themed "show and tell" days. For example, have an "A" day where everyone needs to bring something in that starts with an "A". You can also have themed days, where everyone has to use a word that starts with a certain letter throughout the day, so kids become more comfortable with the alphabet.
