Activities for the Color Green

The color green is everywhere in nature. Animals like frogs, lizards and snakes are green, the grass is green and some of the foods we eat are green. If you are teaching children what the color green is, there are plenty of activities relating to green.
  1. St. Patrick's Day

    • St. Patrick's Day is the perfect time of year to go over the color green and have activities associated with green. Have the kids cut out their own shamrocks. If that is too difficult for the age group, cut them out before the activity. Then, have the kids decorate their shamrocks with glitter, stickers, paints and markers. Take some white tempera paint and have the kids make their own shade of green by adding the amount of green paint they want and mixing them together.

    Green Is for "Go"

    • For this activity, take construction paper and make a big red circle and a big green circle. This will represent the red and green on a traffic light. Attach the big circles onto a pole, one pole for green and the other for red. Either in a gym or outside, make a circular track with cones. Have the children pretend they are in a car and go around the circle while you hold up the pole with the green circle on it. Then, at random times, hold up the red circle for stop.

    Green Turtle Art

    • Use white construction paper and cut out large turtle shapes. Make enough for each child. Have the kids use finger paints or regular paints and brushes to paint the turtle green. Give them different shades of green to paint their turtle. After the paint dries, have the children decorate the turtle with glitter or stickers. You can even have them name the turtle and hang them around the classroom.

    Grow Green

    • Growing any plant involves green stems, green weeds and green grass. Have the kids grow their own grass or cucumbers. Get small pots, seeds, water and soil for each kid. The kids can paint their names on the pots so they know which one is theirs. Plant several seeds in the pot so you have better chances of growing something. The children then can watch their harvests grow throughout the year. Have them do weeding for their plants and water them when they come to class.
