Teach kids about following directions and about different kinds of muffins by baking their own using their favorite ingredients. Ask children to bring what they would like to have on their muffin, such as blueberries, bananas, strawberries, apples or carrots. Children can work together to mix ingredients, pour the muffins in a muffin pan and place the muffins inside the oven. Likewise, kids can bake cookies shaped like muffins or in the shape of the letter "M."
Kids can show their artistic side by drawing and coloring their own muffins. Give kids a piece of paper so they can draw a muffin, or hand out sheets of paper with a muffin already printed on them. Kids can use crayons, paint, markers and even glitter to decorate their muffins. Likewise, you can create a letter and word tracing activity where kids color the muffin, and trace a lowercase and upper case "M" and the word "muffin."
Encourage children to use their imagination by making their own muffins out of clay. Provide the kids with different colors of clay and other materials such as aprons to keep clean and toothpicks and rolling pins to help them sculpt their creations. After students finish making their muffins, invite them to come to the front of the class and explain the kind of muffin that they made.
Have a discussion with kids about their favorite kinds of muffins and ask them why a certain kind is their favorite. Ask them where they get their muffins from, such as from a bakery, supermarket or whether their parents bake them. Ask the students questions such as what kind of job the muffin man has and what other kinds of food he might make. The discussion can change topic and you can ask kids about the letter "M" and the different words that they know that begin with this letter.
