How to Make a Kindergarten Slideshow

Bulletin boards are a great way to share pictures of your students' activities for your Open House/Parents' Night but an even more exciting way to share your pictures is with a slideshow. A slideshow is a comprehensive way to share class information and curriculum as well as showing visitors your completed and current class activities.

Use your digital camera to take pictures of the first day of kindergarten making sure you have each student in two or three pictures. Use your digital camera to take step by step pictures of three or four more activities that you want to have on your slide show (e.g. going on a field trip, having a class visitor, planting a garden etc.).

Download your pictures to your computer by connecting your digital camera cable to your computer's USB port. Use your digital camera software program to save your pictures into a computer picture folder under the name of your choice.

Open the slide presentation program on your computer. Select the design and layout of your title slide. Use your keyboard to type your slideshow title and introduction. Select a slide with a picture and caption layout and click on the picture box to download a saved picture from your computer. Use the keyboard to type a caption in the caption box. Continue the process of selecting picture and caption slides then downloading pictures and typing captions until you have completed your slideshow. Use a title slide to write the words "The End" or "Good Bye" at the end of the slide show if you like.

Begin preparing the slideshow at least an hour early on the night of the Open House/Parents' Night so that you can make sure everything is working. Connect your whiteboard projector cable to the USB port of your computer. Turn the projector on and set it up along with the computer slideshow program to make sure that it can be seen on the whiteboard screen. Place a music CD you have chosen into your CD player and play quietly along with your slideshow. Reset the slideshow and music programs to start at the beginning when everything is working correctly but do not turn the programs off.

Present the slideshow to your visitors like a movie; have everyone sit down and turn off some or all of the lights in the room. Then turn on the slideshow and CD player for your audience to enjoy. Or play the slide show as a standalone presentation in a quiet corner of the room and have the parents and students come and look on their own.
