How to Make Pictures With Pattern Blocks

Pattern blocks provide students with hands-on mathematical experience identifying shapes and learning how shapes fit together geometrically. Beginning students can learn the names of the shapes, and as they progress they will discover how the shapes fit together to create designs. Encourage children to make pictures with pattern blocks. Students' understanding of geometric shapes will show in the designs and pictures they produce with pattern blocks.

Instructions

    • 1

Identify the pattern blocks. The standard group of pattern blocks includes a trapezoid, rhombus, triangle, square, hexagon and parallelogram. Each shape has sides that share the same length so the shapes fit together neatly.

    • 2

Create a simple picture with pattern blocks. For example, line up two hexagons beside each other. Use triangles to fill in the triangular space between the two hexagons. Add three squares above the hexagons and triangles. Add a trapezoid and a rhombus above the squares. Add four triangles above the trapezoid and rhombus. These pattern blocks together can resemble a simple house shape.

    • 3

Fill in a pattern block design with pattern blocks. Start with a hexagon. Experiment by adding various blocks around the hexagon. For example, by adding parallelograms around the hexagon and then adding rhombus shapes and squares around the outer edges of the shape, you can create a flower design. Continue adding different pattern blocks to make the design larger and more intricate. Each student's design should be a different creation.
