Using geometric shape pattern blocks, your child can learn and recognize shapes. Present each pattern block to your child, say the shape's name and have your child count the shape's sides. Have him write down the shapes' names and draw the shapes, then practice identifying the shapes on his own.
Sequencing is an important math concept for solving math operations. Using 20 blocks, alternate two triangles, then two squares, forming a row. Repeat until all pattern blocks are used, completing a row of 20 alternating shapes. Have your child describe the pattern, then repeat with new patterns. Let her create patterns, too.
Using pattern blocks can teach children the process of adding groups of numbers together. Put three red trapezoids in one row and two blue parallelograms in a second row. Have children add the shapes together to solve an addition problem. Use this procedure with subtraction, multiplication, division and other math operations.
