Introduce the concept of fractions to your students before attempting this activity. Although using pattern blocks is an excellent way to illustrate fractions, you will want your students to have a basic understanding of the mathematical principles involved in fractions before beginning with this activity. Show them what a fraction looks like when it is written on paper.
Allow your students to free play with the pattern blocks when first introducing the learning tool. This will help motivate your students and get them excited about the activity. Ask them to describe the shapes and colors to one another in groups to ensure that each student is able to recognize the individual pieces.
Illustrate one fraction at a time, using the pattern blocks. For example, begin by demonstrating one half. Ask students how many green triangles will fit in the blue rhombus. Two green triangles will fit in the blue rhombus. Have students take away one of the green triangles and ask them what fraction of the blue rhombus is filled up by green squares. They should be able to recognize that one half of the blue rhombus is filled up by the green triangle. Repeat this process for each fraction you want to illustrate.
Include an online interactive activity to help your students play around with more-advanced concepts and explore fractions on their own. There are also many online programs teachers can use. Allow children to spend time in class on these websites and encourage them to spend time outside of class exploring the pattern blocks as well.
