How to Use Origami in Mathematics

Origami is an ancient Japanese art form that involves folding and creating elaborate shapes using paper. Origami teaches patience and perseverance, as well as many useful mathematics concepts. Students enjoy making things with their hands, while teachers enjoy having visual representations to refer to when teaching abstract mathematical concepts such as volume and capacity.

Instructions

    • 1

Teach your students spatial relationships by having them fold the origami paper into specific shapes. Spatial relationships are the point where two objects meet in space, such as where the points of two folds come together without overlapping.

    • 2

Practice recognizing geometric shapes by having your students unfold their origami designs to reveal a multitude of geometric shapes on their paper. See if your students can accurately name all of the geometric shapes caused by the folding of paper.

    • 3

Study the concepts of volume and capacity of an object by filling, then measuring the amount of liquid an origami boat can hold.

    • 4

Have students create three-dimensional origami cubes, then measure them to find the area.
