Determine the purpose of why you need the ellipsis. Ellipses are used to omit words, indicate a pause in the speech and show an unfinished thought. Read the quote that you plan to use in your paper and decide where the ellipsis should be placed.
Punctuate the end of the sentence appropriately. Place a period after the ellipsis, with a space between them, if the ellipsis indicates an omitted word that is at the end of the sentence. Use a question mark if the sentence poses a question, such as "What if the answer is right under our noses ...?" Consult the stylebook to be sure that you are following all the proper punctuation protocols.
Follow the writing style guidelines. Most instructors prefer their papers to follow a certain style for punctuation and citation purposes. For example, Associated Press Style and MLA Style dictates that a space should be use on each side of an ellipsis. Proofread your paper to make sure that you have used the proper punctuation marks.
