How to Mummify Lesson Plan

Scientists have discovered mummies from ancient civilizations throughout the world. Mummies -- bodies preserved and treated for burial -- can be scary to some children if the concept is not introduced properly. It's best to introduce mummies with a lesson on Egyptian history or when you discuss ancient civilizations.

Instructions

    • 1

Write a list of questions about mummies for students to answer using library reference books or the Internet. Sample questions include "What is a group of mummies called?" and "Name three famous mummies. Where were these mummies found? Who found them?" Discuss the answers in class.

    • 2

Rip up newspaper and ask children to create a mummy out of papier-mache. Mold a mummy tomb out of balls of newspaper. Create papier-mache paste (see resources for recipes) and distribute in ice cream tubs. Children should dip the paper in the paste and stick to the molds. Wrap the entire tomb in papier-mache. Let the mummies dry over night and paint them the next day in any design the children want. Use real mummy tombs as examples or let the children design their own patterns. Discuss the details of the mummy tomb with the class.

    • 3

Divide children into teams of three. Give each team a roll of toilet paper and ask the children to pick a student to be the "mummy." The two team members must then work together to wrap the mummy in toilet paper. Make sure you ask children to avoid wrapping the mummy's face so the child can breathe properly. The first team to finish is the winner.
