Establish clear goals, both daily and longer-term, for your preschool class. A daily goal may be to teach the numbers one through five, as part of a longer-term goal to teach children to count, say, write and recognize their numbers.
Identify specific tasks that will help achieve the identified goals. Build these into the daily activity times. For our counting goal, teach a counting song during music time, teach children to count to five using manipulatives during math time and reinforce the numbers with an indoor or outdoor game in which children use the numbers -- hopscotch or "Mother, May I?", for example.
Organize the tasks into a sequence that works well for this age group. This should include: a welcoming activity in the morning; snack times in the morning and late afternoon; both individual and small group activities; games or activities that incorporate movement; a mid-day rest or "quiet" period; and positive reinforcement of the children for successful effort and accomplishment. Daily lesson plans should follow a routine, be divided into short activity or program segments and include plenty of hands-on or interactive elements.
