How to Use Colons in a List

Colons are a type of punctuation that often confuses people. Although they are sometimes called "old fashioned, colons have their place and are needed to make a list in a sentence. Be cautious when using a colon. It may sound alright when you read it aloud, but you could be breaking a grammatical rule.

Instructions

    • 1

Start the sentence with an independent clause. An independent clause works as a complete sentence.

    • 2

Add a colon after the independent clause and follow with the list. Do not put a preposition or a verb between the clause and the list. For example, "Lasagna recipes need the following: noodles, meat, cheese, pasta sauce, peppers, onion and garlic." The "follow" usually requires a colon if it precedes a list.

    • 3

Use commas between all the items on the list except between the last two. Use "and" to complete the list.
