Bookmaking Ideas for Kindergarten

Your kindergarten students can make an "All About Me" book for family and friends. This eight-page book with a book cover decorated with your students' handprints will be a meaningful project for your school open house. Your students will create pages about themselves, their family and their school. This will be a memorable book for your students to make and for their family members to read and treasure.
  1. Myself, My Family and My School

    • Type the titles and the fill-in-the-blank sentences for the eight pages of the "All About Me" book using your computer, then print out the pages of the book for each student. Your students will decorate the cover of the book with handprints and use decorative labels for the book title and their name.

Page 1 will have the title "All About Me." Below the title will be the fill-in sentence: "This book was written by _____________." The student will write his or her name in this space. All pages should be numbered.

Page 2 will have the title "About Myself." Below the title will be the sentence, "This is my self portrait." Leave enough space for the self-portrait. At the bottom of the page should be fill-in-the-blank sentences like:

      " My name is ___________."

      "I am ____ years old."

      "My favorite food is ______________."

      "My best friend is ________________."

Page 3 will have the title "My Family." Below the title will be the sentence "This is my family." Leave enough space for the family portrait. At the bottom of the page there should be fill-in-the-blank sentences like:

      " I live in a ___________." (House, apartment.)

      "I have ________ sisters."

      "I have ________ brothers."

Page 4 will have the title "My School." Below will be the sentence, "This is what my school looks like." Leave enough space for a picture about the school. At the bottom of the page should be fill-in-the-blank sentences like:

      "My teacher is ___________."

      "I am in room _____________."

"At school I like to play ________________."

    My Eyes and My Hair

    • For this section the students will need hand mirrors and water colors for the "My Eyes" book page and assorted yarn colors and glue for the "My Hair" page. Braid strands of yarn to make curly hair and leave it braided for at least a day.

The Page 5 title is "My Eyes." Below it should be the sentence, "These are my eyes." Make a drawing of a large eye in the middle of the page. Then at the bottom of the page should be the fill-in sentence, "The color of my eyes is____________." For this page the students will look in the mirror then paint the eye on the page the appropriate water color.

The title for Page 6 is "My Hair." Below should be the sentence, "This is my hair." Beneath the sentence make a large drawing of a face with eyes, nose and mouth. At the bottom of the page write the fill-in-the-blank sentence "The color of my hair is ____________." For this activity the students will look at their hair in the mirror. Then glue the appropriate color and texture of yarn (curly or straight) around the face on this page to make it look like their hair.

    My Weight and My Height

    • For the activity of weighing and measuring the students you will need a weight scale and a height chart.

The Page 7 title is "My Weight." Below should be the sentence, "My weight is _____________ pounds. The next sentence will be, "Here is how I looked when I weighed myself." There should then be enough space for the picture of your student being weighed.

The title for Page 8 will be "My height is _______________." The sentence below it is, "This is how we measured my height:" Under this sentence will be enough space for the picture of your student being measured on the wall chart.

    Book Cover: Handprint Designs

    • For the book cover you will need tempera paint, paintbrushes, yarn, a hole punch and tape. Design decorative labels with the title of the book and the name of each student.

Fold a sheet of construction paper in half for the book cover. Use a hole punch to punch holes 1 inch from the book fold and 2 inches apart starting from the top of the folded book cover to the bottom. Use the book cover as a template to punch holes on the left-hand side of pages 1, 3, 5 and 7 of your book.

Place the pages of the book together inside the book cover. Align all the holes, then wrap a 2-inch piece of tape tightly around one end of a 3-foot-long piece of yarn to make a needle. Starting at the top hole, use the needle to sew back and forth through each set of aligned holes. Near the top of the book tie the two loose ends of the yarn into a double bow. Staple the bow securely near the top hole to secure it, then glue on the decorative label.
